Traditional hedge laying for beginners workshops - Winter 2024/25

You could be interested in taking part in one of our hedgelaying workshops

Please email us to be put on the waiting list.

The hedge will be at The Firs, Pennerley, near Bishops Castle - a lovely (and easy!) Hawthorn hedge on a farm following regenerative principles of land management. We will complete the laying of this hedge started in 2024.

Workshops will last two days each.

Places are limited to 12 people per workshop.

Some background on our hedgelaying trainer:

Richard Clarke (from Really Rural) has over 20 years experience working in forestry and conservation and is a lecturer in Countryside Management

On our workshops, trainees can get started on a traditional country skill that helps improve a hedge's structure and strength. A laid hedge provides a stock proof barrier, weather protection to crops, a corridor and shelter for wildlife.

On our workshops you will:

  • Learn about the history and benefits of hedgelaying

  • Discover hedge laying techniques and tools (including maintenance of hand tools)

  • Get hands-on hedgelaying practice (Midland/Border cross style - clear out deadwood, select and laying pleachers, trimming, staking and binding)

Please note there will be a token charge this year for these workshops: £30 per person (total) for the 2 day workshops. NB if the cost is genuinely difficult we will consider applications for free email Sarah on admin@cpreshropshire.org.uk
